You don't have to declaw your cat to keep him from scratching furniture and clothes. Cats like to scratch, so give him something to scratch on. A scratching post rubbed with some catnip makes it easy for cats to learn where to scratch and gives them a good place to do it when you tell them not to do it elsewhere.

If you get a tall cat tree (floor to celling ones are great) they also use it for exercise.
